- Did I use the right phrase here "knew her through my friends"?

    "...through my friends" is fine, Namlan. I think, though, that I would say "I know her through my friends" (unless you don't know her anymore, in which case, it would be "knew").

    The same logic applies to the original question. "How did you know her" means that you don't know her anymore. Unless she's dead, that doesn't make much sense.

    Using "knew" makes this conversation sound as if "she" is dead.
    In that context, of course, it is precisely the kind of dialogue that happens when someone sits down beside a stranger at a funeral.
