    The idea of a "pulse" like the one in our bodies that is a rough measure of the beating of our hearts, is often used metaphorically to refer to spot checks of a dynamic condition. Checking the "pulse of your stress level" means to make frequent, brief assessments of how much stress you have.

    People insist on talking about a "thumb on the pulse" to mean "checking the pulse" even though no self-respecting medical profession would use their thumb to check a pulse.
