As energy prices have dropped over the past couple of years, emissions have ticked back up.
What does "ticked back up" mean here?

ticked back up = increased (I think of time passing, as with the tick of a clock ... I also think of small increments like minutes passing).

I think "ticked" is being used as a metaphor likening the regular increase in emissions to the ticking of a clock. "back up" means they are "increasing to their former level". So, the emissions have increased at a regular intervals to their former levels".

Thank you so much, Copyright and Franco-filly. I think your explanation is rather helpful to me, Franco, thanks again.
