Hi, i'm trying to translate the following:

Tommy could only catch a word here and there

At the moment I can only translate up until: Tommy solo podría... but after that I have absolutely no idea!

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Is "could" the past of "can" or is it the conditional? >>Tommy sólo pudo/Tommy sólo podría...

Tommy sólo podría cazar/captar/entender... alguna que otra palabra.

Tommy sólo pudo/podía entender alguna palabra suelta.

podría would refer to the hypothetical future (=would be able to).

Does suelta sound correct in Spanish?
In English the word isolated wouldn't be appropriate for the sentence, but I pressume this is not the case in spanish?

No intentes traducir la palabra "suelta" en la frase de Agró.

Tommy sólo pudo entender alguna palabra suelta.

La expresión conjunta "alguna palabra suelta" significa lo mismo que "a word here and there".
