I would like to say something like: "I was trying to observe and learn the way they dress and copy it (to melt into the crowd)". Is it possible to say "I was trying to catch their trends" or "pick up their trends"? What other collocation I could use with the word trends? I'm striving after maximal brevity, looking for words with a lot of connotations.

    I wouldn't use trends; I would use style/styles.
