Can I say " Although some people think it’s not a good idea to dictate a decision/choice to children, I believe it’s necessary"

    Hello, Ethangale87

I am not certain what you mean by 'dictate a choice'. Please tell us what you want to say using other words.

In that case, I might say 'dictate a child's choice', or, maybe, 'dictate to a child the decision he or she must make.'

However, neither of them sound quite right to me, because generally, a choice or decision is usually something one makes for oneself, so the notion of 'dictating a choice' is paradoxical.

For me, the natural way to express the idea is 'make choices/decisions for children' or 'make children's decisions for them.'
