Whilst discussing the recent ban on selling hard liquor in the Czech Republic I wanted to say ‘The police have been checking shops and bars to enforce the ban’ Not sure if the following sentence is correct, and if it is, is it very formal language?
Policie dělala kontrolu v obchodech a barech k prosazováním zákazu.

It's better to say "Policie kontrolovala obchody a bary, aby prosadila zákaz." which is more correction of your Czech sentence, Czech people would say maybe: "Policie dohlížela na dodržování zákazu tak, že kontrolovala obchody a bary."
