Hallo, I'm translating Lawrence Durrell's "Antrobus complete", and I can't understand the general meaning of the following sentence:

"It was inhuman, and at times I got so indignant that I thought I should get circles under my prose or lose my vibrato or both."

The sentence is clearly a joke... but I dont' get it!
Can you help me, please?

    There's not enough context here. What was he doing? What is it that was inhuman?
