je souhaiterai savoir ce que signifit "grinding away" dans la phrase suivante:

Instead of grinding away into the small hours, you would be better off playing for a couple of hours, then going to bed.

Le contexte est ici et on parle de quelqu'un qui joue à un jeu vidéo.

Si tu cherches dans le dico de WordRef, tu trouveras deux discussions de "grind away" et "grind on and on" (plus ou moins synonymes) qui éclaireront ta lanterne, je crois.
"Travailer dur" ou "travailler laborieusement" est le sens général, mais je crois qu'il y a un soupçon d'ironie dans la phrase, vue la juxtaposition de "travail" et "jeu vidéo"!

Ah, I assumed that both "playing" and "grinding away" referred to the video game -- in other words, "instead of playing all night long, you'd be better off playing a couple of hours and going to bed." You are probably right, wildan!

Yes, that's misleading English. The connotation of "grinding away" is very much of working hard and long, not playing. There is a sexual connotation too, but better not go there!

Apologies if contributing to a thread so long after its last period of activity is frowned upon, but I was looking up some terms and came upon this. I disagree with the above comments. Amongst gamers, 'grinding' is a common expression which refers (most frequently) to the drudge work one must perform in order to gain levels, or 'level up'. Usually a boring, repetitive task which is neither fun nor gratifying, but is the most efficient way to reach higher levels.

Pour les francophones, 'grinding' est (je pense) en fait dans ce contexte un terme utilisé par les joueurs de jeux vidéo, qui est le plus souvent utilisé pour exprimer les tâches répétitives qu'il faut accomplir pour passer au(x) niveau(x) supérieur(s). La connotation d'ennui est assez forte.
