to kick the addiction

Hello,

this is an (expression? idiom? current usage?) I read in a magasine. I found it in no dictionnary. I do not really undestand the verb "kick" here. How can we "kick" an addiction?

    Can we "kick" smoking? ( V+ing) or "kick" the cigarette (V+N)...

    We most often say "quit smoking/drinking/boozing"

    I think "kick smoking" might be understandable, so long as additional context information is provided. I don't think that the sense is immediately understandable. Therefore, that specific usage may not be advisable.
