Hi.

Can you use the verb pack referring to the covering of e.g. a rivet with silicone? Here's the sentence: We pack the rivet with a piece of the silicone tubing. Does it make any sense? Should I use cover instead?

Thanks:)

I don't think you can use "pack" like this. Pack is used for putting something into something - he packed the tube with dynamite - not for covering something.

Maybe! IF the silicone tubing is placed in a hole before the rivet is inserted, it would
serve as packing, somewhat like valve stem packing in a faucet valve. If the tubing is
placed on top of the rivet head, I agree with timpeac that this would be incorrect.

This sounds like some form of waterproofing process.

To pack 'packing' is a valid use of pack as a verb.

Plumbers and drainers often 'pack' wadding or plastic or fire retardants into holes or around things to be stuck into holes for a variety of purposes.

Thank you. Just to make sure I want to say I'm describing the process to make a fishing rig. Is "pack" still ok? We need to pack the rivet to keep the thread from getting caught. Does this make sense?
