to ride low to the trees

Hello everybody,

I’m not sure I got the meaning of the above in the following context (it takes place at Woodstock festival ’69):

Barry Melton remembers, “I was in the chopper with Joe Cocker, and we were riding low to the trees.”

My try:
Barry Melton se rappelle : “J’étais à bord de l’hélico avec Joe Cocker, et on volait juste au-dessus des arbres.”

Thank you in advance for your help!

    Thank you chrisp124! :)

Could a native English speaker confirm me this?
    Thank you in advance!

    Oh, I see!
Thus, it would be something like "on volait bas, en direction des arbres", wouldn't it?
