I'm trying to write a sentence (in Perfekt) that essentially translates to "I heard him playing guitar the whole night." In this context, I hear him through the wall while I am trying to sleep. I'm not sure about how "die ganze Nacht" and "Gitarre spielen" should be arranged, but this is what I have produced:
"Ich habe ihn die ganze Nacht (auf der?) Gitarre spielen gehört."
It looks odd to put the two nouns (Nacht & Gitarre) next to each other, but I do not know if "...auf der..." is necessary or correct, and I'm not sure even where to look for instruction on such a sentence structure as this. Is there a term for this?
