to smash a state of mind

Hi again!

Still translating a Steely Dan's song ("Charlie Freak") and finding it difficult to translate the word "to smash":

"...And me so wise I bought his prize
For chicken feed
Newfound cash soon begs to smash a state of mind
Close inspection fast revealed his favorite kind"

Context: the song is about a homeless man who sells his prized possession (a golden ring) to purchase drugs that he overdoses on. He sells it to the narrator of the song.

What does "to smash" mean in this context? I find it difficult to translate, although I think I understand the idea: the homeless man, having been paid, needs to get drugs.

Thank you again!

    Thank you, Mr. Dent?

So something like: "El dinero recién encontrado pide destruir un estado de ánimo" ¿?
