to spit on the floor

Greetings,

I'm not always sure how to translate ‘floor’: how do you say, for example, “Don't spit on the floor.”

You would, of course, say this to an ill-mannered person when in a house, referring to the floor of the room you are in.

If there is more than one way of saying it, please let me know.

Best wishes, and many thanks,

Simon

    Hello seitt,

    We say: "Yerlere tükürmeyiniz."

We translate "floor" as "yer" in Turkish.

You can say "zemin" too but it is not so common, we generally prefer "yer", it doesn't matter indoors or outdoors.

One small addition: We don't say it, but we write it. When we're speaking, that '-iz' is dropped. It is way too polite to be used for someone who spits on the floor.

    So,

    Written: Yerlere tükürmeyiniz.
Spoken: Yerlere tükürmeyin. or Tükürmeyin yerlere! (Stressing the imperative verb; thus, more aggressive.)
