To start a partridge

Dear forumsers,

I am translating into Catalan some writings on Majorca by a lady Grosvenor (Britain, late 19th cent.)

At some point, she states the following: "Our walk was prolonged for some time in this wood, where our spaniel started four red-legged partridges".

I have the feeling that "to start" in this context means "to run after" but have been unable to find it in the dictionary.

I would appreciate confirmation :)
