Hello. I always have a doubt when it comes to cars. Is it right to say "to start the engine", as in "he got into his car and started the engine"?

Would "turn on" be ok as well? What other synonym verbs/sentences could be used?

"Started" would be the word that I would use. "Turn on" would not be used in my world.
