to strain

English - Australian
I have an "uncomfortable" topic to cover with my pharmacy students - constipation! But I need to check how this would be said in French:

"Your stools may be very hard, making them so difficult to pass that you have to strain."

Here's what I have, but "to strain" is the bit I'm having trouble with...

"Vos selles pourraient être très dures et il pourrait être très difficile d'aller aux toilettes sans se forcer"

I think the translation covers the "sense" of the sentence, but is there a better verb to use here? I found "strain" for muscles etc. in the dictionnary but nothing that really covered it here....

Any ideas?

Merci en avance!
