My friend didn't expect my call so I said I like to surprise people or I like surprising people. Which one is correct?

"I like to surprise people" is probably best, as there could be a confusion in "I like surprising people" — does that mean "I like people who are surprising" or I like to surprising people"?

"I like surprising people" is not wrong (nor did maxiogee suggested anything like that). However there is a possibility, in certain circustances, for people to understand not that "I" like to surprise people but that "I" like people who are surprising.
