to take everything in one's stride

I don't know the origin, but if you think of a hurdler jumping hurdles, then that runner is "taking each hurdle in his stride", meaning that he doesn't interrupt his rythm when jumping each hurdle.

Generalising, we would all like to:

overcome all set-backs easily = take everything (that happens to us) in our stride (without it causing too much interruption to our day-to-day life).
