to weld a crack over / together

Hello everybody!

When we say that a crack is in need of repair by welding, should we say that:

a.a crack should be welded over.

or

b.a crack should be welded together.

    I would not use a preposition at all.

    That crack needs to be welded.

    With the preposition it sounds awkward to me. But I am not a mason. Maybe they speak differently in the profession!
