Hi,everyone.

We have the sense that abortion would be widely, if not completely, legal today in the United States, with far less controversy, if state legislatures had been allowed to continue the process of legalization that was picking up steam when the Supreme Court shut it down.
Now the legislative branches have returned to the fight. Too bad they’re on the other side.

Would you please tell me the grammar structure of "Too bad they’re on the other side." ?

Thanks,

It's a sentence with lots of bits deliberately left out.

That they are on the other side is too bad.

Change that into a cleft sentence.
It is too bad that they are on the other side.

Then omit the introductory "It is" and the relative pronoun "that" and contract "they are".
Too bad they're on the other side.

<< In the sentence I invented, "that" is not a relative pronoun - sorry. >>

    The structure is:

    • [It is] Too bad [that] they’re on the other side
which is a cleft-structure version of

    • [The fact that] they're on the other side is too bad
