I like (C) the best, then (A), (B), and (D). These words are all synonyms. What is the source of this question?

I imagine the answer key (if there is one) is A. Not B for me at any time ... although C and D are possible in the right circumstances.

And yes, the answer provided is C. But I don't see why it's the best. I don't have the intuition. You wouldn't penalize the students if they chose, A, B, or D, would you?

You have two native English speakers who differ on the best, and then go on to say that two or three of the alternatives are fine ... which usually means it's a poor question. I wouldn't worry about it. There is no nuance that makes all of us pick the same answer.
