Total increased dramatically

I am confused about the part of speech of the first 'total' in bold in the following sentences. Is it a noun by itself, or is it an adjective and the real subject is omitted? Besides, why there is no article before the first 'total'?

The pie charts compare the amount of electricity produced using five different sources of fuel in two countries over two separate years.

Total increased dramatically from 1980 to 2000 in both Australia and France. While the totals for both countries were similar, there were big differences in the fuel sources used.
