transfer the fork to their right hand

Hi,

Americans usually put down the knife and then transfer the fork to their right hand before beginning to eat.

I was wondering if I can replace transfer with switch? It sounds fine to me, and I like to confirm it with your comments.

Thanks.

You can use switch but the sense would be more informal so it would depend. I would use switch if speaking and transfer if writing formally in a report.

In the USA switch would be acceptable as either conversation or writing. Transfer is reserved for certain references. Eg. "We are going to transfer your son from West High School to East High School." IE A letter In matters of educatoinal administration. But, the newspaper would probably report, "The Superintendant is going to switch a dozen students from West to East High School."
