In the following passage, what does the underlined part mean? How or in what course do they actually climb?

"What do you think of Nace's theory about the ridge? "
"What theory?" I asked.
"He believes we should traverse under it from the glacier up. Says the ridge itself is too exposed."

    "Nace believes that we should traverse (= cross from one peak to the other) under (= at a lower level than) the ridge, from (= beginning at) the glacier up (= and then climb upwards).
