What are the critics' "rarefied realms"? Take an instance, are their gated communities their rarefied realms? They (now pretend to) wish for someone to trespass on them to show they are politically correct? Is this what Sessions is saying?

**************

On Tuesday, Attorney General Jeff Sessions tried out a new approach to the explosive issue: attempted humor. The government’s top lawyer found a punchline in the circumstances of children separated from their parents.

It is a fate, he suggested, that the president’s critics eagerly wished for anyone who would dare trespass on their rarefied realms, claiming without evidence that immigration activists enjoy opulence inaccessible to everyday people. He suggested their concern for their own material security was at odds with their alleged endorsement of open borders.

Taking "rarefied realms" to be gated communities is a reasonably interpretation, though not necessarily exactly what Sessions meant.

The "fate" being talked about is children being separated from their parents (at least, that it is what the writer implies). Sessions is saying that the president's critics would want this punishment imposed on anyone who trespassed on their own property.

    Thank you. :)

Sessions is saying that the president's critics would want this punishment imposed on anyone who trespassed on their own property.
So what Sessions hints is that why do you (critics) want to criticize president? You are actually criticizing yourselves.

Am I on the right track?
