From the book A Cursed Kiss by Jenny Hickman.
Context: Keelynn and Robert are talking standing on the balcony. Before that Keelynn was standing at the hall (the ball was taking place there) and Robert grabbed her elbow and dragged her towards the open balcony door. During the conversation Keelynn found out that Robert was going to marry her sister Aveen for an inheritance and got very angry.
I spat his name like the curse it was and shoved against his chest. I had been nervous and scared and had tried backing out. But then he’d told me he loved me, and I’d given myself to him because I’d loved him too.
What does "tried backing out" mean?
Does it mean tried to leave?
