I would like to write an email where I say:

"I tried to contact you by telephone but unfortunately without success."

Is it correct? My doubt is "but", should I write:

"I tried to contact you by telephone, unfortunately without success."

    U.K. English
I think both sentences are absolutely fine, although I have a slight preference for the second one.

Actually, you can just say "I tried to contact you by phone without success/in vain".
