'try someone' ?

Senior Member
Hello everybody!

I wonder if the verb "try" can be used in the following sentence:

"To be certain of my loyalty to her, she tried me many times." (What I mean is that she tested my loyalty many times)

Thanks a lot

Perhaps "she put me to the test many times" would be clearer. "Tried" has too many other interpretations, and in US English I don't think "she tested my loyalty" is the first one that would come to mind.

I agree. It can be used, but it probably shouldn't be since there are much clearer ways to say it.
