type in

Hi,

Could someone tell me if this sentence is correct?

Please do not type in the name of the software in this field.

Should it rather be "Please do not type the name of the software in this field"?

I always thought that type in needs to go together, but I am wondering if in this particular sentence it would be incorrect to repeat it.

Thank you for your help.

:)

I don't think you need "in" after "type" in that sentence. I'd write it this way: Please do not type the name of the software in this field. That should be enough.

I would recommend one other change. The word "type," which comes from typewriters, is falling out of use. I'd suggest "Please do not enter the name of the software in this field." (It might be even more effective to tell people what they should enter, not what they shouldn't, but that would change the content - not just the phrasing.)
