Udmurt 'андан' and Ossetian 'ӕндон' (steel)

Hello,

The words for 'steel' are андан /andan/ in Udmurt (Finno-Ugric) and ӕндон /ɐndon/ in Ossetian (Eastern Iranian).
They must be related but I'm curious to know the etymology of this word.

I know about some Iranian (Scythian) loanwords in Finno-Ugric but most languages in the Caucasus and Central Asia seem to use "polad" from Persian (or a similar form).

Abayev considers the origin of the word uncertain, mentioning some apparently related Vainakh words as well (like Chechen онда "firm, hard").
