un faire valoir progressiste

Could anyone offer suggestions for a translation of "faire valoir" in the following? It is from an essay on avant-garde art of the 1930s.

So mathematical laws were seen as either the principle of universal harmony dating back to Classical Greece, or as evidence of progressive attitudes? I don't think "evidence" is quite the right word, though.

Dans l'attente de vos réponses,

Interestingly, un faire-valoir (in comedy) also means a straight man or a straight woman, the one who feeds the lines to a comedian.
