una pistola a tamburo

Could someone help me translate this phrase from a piece of detective fiction?

It refers to someone coming across 'una pistola a tamburo “Smith & Wesson” calibro ‘38'

I have translated it as ' A "Smith & Wesson" barrelled, 38' calibre gun'
but don't know if this is correct? I'm assuming 'a tamburo' means 'barrel type', any suggestions on a better translation or rendering of this phrase much appreciated... Thank you
