I'm looking for the right word in English for 'connue'

We're talking mathematics:

le paramètre doit suivre une loi statistique connue

Is it :
known?
recognised?
accepted? statistical law

please help me...

I think "recognised" is the correct term in English, but "accepted" should work too. They do both sound a little weak though. How strong is "connu" in this context. Does it imply any doubt as to the veracity/solidity of the "paramètre"?

    I'm not sure,
I'd like to keep the idea that it is a globally "accepted" formula.

Talking of which, can any amazingly intelligent maths buff explain the difference between the English words:
    function
    formula
    rule and
    law.
I don't know which one to use (same sentence as above and many others like it!)
