Union demands

I'm translating for a friend parts of Jerome Kern's life by Gerald Bordman.

"Businnes was down, and producers were caught in a profit squeeze brought on by increasing union demands and the public's determination to resist higher ticket prices".

It's about theatre businnes - Broadway musicals :)

My translation:

Questions:
Is the translation correct?
Is "union" = "the syndicate"?

Thank you in advance for your kind response!
