Friends,
What does تام mean in the following sentence (from Mirwah ki ratein by Rafaqat Hayat):
چاچی نے اس کی مسکراہٹ نظر انداز کرتے ہوئے نظریں جھکا لیں اور دیگچی الٹا کر تام تم چینی کے پیالوں میں چائے انڈیلنے لگی۔

Platts gives
تام tāmm (p. 306)
A تام tāmm, vulg. tām (part. n. of تمّ 'to become complete'), adj. Complete, entire, whole, full; perfect, consummate
Does تام mean ‘all’?

  • تام تم چینی کے پیالوں
Is there any chance this is a typo for just تام چینی کے پیالوں...?

    H تام ताम tām [Prk. तम्बं = S. ताम्रं], s.m. Copper ( = tāṅbā, — used chiefly in comp.): — tām-ćīnī, s.f. Enamelled copper.

Awfully sorry, the typo is mine. The text is as noted by you: تام چینی۔
Thanks very much aevynn SaaHib. I should have put in more effort!😀

Would you agree the last word is لگیں? As our school reports of yesteryears used to say, "Must try harder", "Room for improvement"! :)

Qureshpor SaaHib, I wish I knew the niceties of Urdu grammar. Please educate me on this.
I just copied the text as it is (with a typo as my contribution) but, as for the word لگی in my quoted text, it is the printer who should have tried harder!😀 Here is a screenshot:

No, Gope SaaHib. I said everything tongue in cheek but now that I have had a look at the fuller context, you have not typed the sentence incorrectly. I expected "lagiiN" لگیں because of the usual respect for mother/aunty and so on but it seems the author has written "lagii" لگی from his perspective and not the perspective or a nephew or a niece.
