Urdu: علامت

Friends,

The use of علامت in the following sentence is much troubling me. It is a direct quotation from the grammar I am using:

مصدر کی آخری علامت نا گرا دینے سے اصل مادہ فعل باقی رہ جاتا ہے

The word علامت has many meanings. Indeed, I have around twenty listed meanings for it. The trouble is none of them fit in this context.

Does علامت mean 'syllable' or 'grapheme/morpheme' in this usage? These are meanings I do not have for علامت as of yet.

As you can see from this post in another thread which I wrote two days ago, I had to translate the same word.

Alfaaz SaaHib, in this case it doesn't say anything about this word because this symbol is used at the end of the entry in order to mark it. If it figures in between the meanings, it should be understood as a mark of the beginning of a difference in meanings.

Farhang-e-Asafiyyah, Vol. I, p. 26:

علاماتِ لُغت
اگر معانی کے بیچ میں یِہ ❊ پھُول آئے تو وہاں سے معانی کا فرق خیال کیا جائے اور اخیر پر علامتِ ختم۔​

In your context, the word which is both faithful to the original and suitable in an English language grammar text is "infinitive marker". Do you think my train of thought is right?

How about "suffix"?

Suffix would be not usable in e.g. علامتِ اضافت, which in Urdu can be the Persian one or the postposition kaa/kii/ke -in both cases not a suffix.

The problem with it being 'infinitive marker' is that we are told that نا is مصدر کی آخری علامت. For نا to be the final marker then all the other parts of a مصدر would have to be markers as well. That does not make sense hence my suggestion of 'syllable' or 'grapheme/morpheme'.

I am now 100% convinced the word علامت is being used for 'morpheme' and specifically 'inflectional morpheme'. My authority is this.

I started a new thread for this further meaning of علامت. I have 37 meanings listed for علامت yet Dr Maulvi Abdul Haq seems to use it here to mean 'word' and nowhere do I find any Urdu resource giving its meaning as 'word'.

بعض اوقات آخری علامت بھی حذف ہو جاتی ہے جیسے اس میں لڑائی کی کیا بات تھی، وہ اپنا کام کرتا تھا تم اپنا کام کرتے (یعنی کرتے رہتے)۔ میری عادت تھی کہ پہلے کھانا کھاتا پھر پڑھنے جاتا (یعنی کھاتا تھا اور جاتا تھا)، جب کبھی وہ آتے ہزاروں باتیں سنا جاتے (آتے تھے اور سنا جاتے تھے)۔

Do friends have any thoughts on this?

Its very clear, no? The core meaning of alaamat is sign, and word is the most common way to express sign.
