Friends, what does 'Tum par zaahirii' mean here:
Rashiidah chand lamhe use ghuurtii rahii thii phir bolii: "tum yih baat mujh se kyoN chhupaa rahe ho?"
"Tum par zaahirii kaun sii baat hai?"
رشیدہ چند لمہے اسے گھورتی رہی تھی پھر بولی۔ "تم یہ بات مجھ سے کیوں چھپا رہے ہو"
"تم پر ظاہری کون سی بات ہے؟"
شکریہ:)

  • Gope SaaHib,

A quick glance shows that zaahirii is a noun and the antonym of chhupaa.

I would translate the two sentences as:

'Why are you hiding this matter from me?'
    'What do you know?'

NB: I have rendered it in a natural flowing English. A more literal though stilted translation would be: 'What is known by you?'

'Known' is as good as anything to stand in for baat.

I am sure a more knowledgeable friend will be able to advise you better.

    Yours sincerely,

    Alex

He's trying to hide something from Rashida, but clearly not doing a good job as it's 'apparent' from his expression/mannerisms that there is something he is not telling her.

Yes, this is an aggressive, sarcastic retort. Thanks to both friends.:)

    Friends,

I was wrong in asserting ظاہری/zaahirii to be a noun. It is, of course, an adjective. I can only blame the lateness of the hour of my initial posting and the superficial similarity of of zaahirii's form with that of a feminine noun.

    Yours sincerely,

    Alex
