Usage of between

Hey guys, I have a question that's really bothering me.
It's related to the usage of the term: between.

I learned that between should be used when there's a choice... e.g: between me and you.

Instead, what happens if we find the following situation?
Mark and Jane were standing outside our condo, there's nobody between them.

Now, being stick to the rule I should use among, anyway since I know that there're only two characters involved... How can I manage that?
In this case, is "Between" accepted?
