Would a comma be required between the words "email" and "Luke" in the following sentence:

Maybe by "email" Luke meant that he forwarded you my email address, rather than the email I sent to him

And is the comma before "rather" necessary?

I would prefer a question mark at the end, but I am not sure that it is necessary - it depends how the sentence is said.

"Perhaps he meant A rather than B?"
