variable precipitation

I've come across a passage describing the impact of climate changes on human health, in which there is a sentence " Increasing temperatures and more variable precipitation are expected to reduce crop yield in many tropical developing regions." How to understand variable precipitation? Thanks!

    "Variable precipitation" refers to rainfall that isn't consistent or predictable.

    precipitation (WR dictionary): falling water that has been condensed in the atmosphere, as rain, snow, or hail: a slim chance of precipitation.

    It is "more variable precipitation". The writer expects temperatures to increase and precipitation (rain/snowfall) to become more variable.

    Crops will be affected by:
    --- too little rain (etc); drought;
    --- too much rain; flooding;
    --- unseasonal patterns; different from what generations of farmers in a particular region have learned to expect.

    Even if the amount of annual rainfall was exactly the same as before, the unpredictably changing patterns could destroy crops, eg early rain followed by drought could impact germination and later growth.
