The expression "un desayuno equilibrado" is quite typical to talk about a varied healthy breakfast.
"Una gran variedad de comida" would be more used in a banquet.

Hay que tomar un desayuno equilibrado. is what I would say.

    Any other ideas, foreros?

I think it depends on the context. (Doesn't it always?).

If you are saying "you" in general, as in a rule all should follow, then I agree that it would be "Hay que tomar un desayuno equilibrado". But, if you are actually saying to someone that they personally should eat a balanced breakfast, then I would say "Deberías tomar un desayuno equilibrado".

    Perdonen que intervenga, pero...

    • "You should eat a variety of foods for breakfast" = debe/deberías ingerir una variedad de alimentos en el desayuno

    • Deberías tomar un desayuno equilibrado = you should have/eat a balanced breakfast.

Como pueden ver, las frases comunican mensajes diferentes. Que valga la aclaración.

    Saludos,
