varying amount of throat inflammation

Hi. I am not sure if I understand phrase "varying amount of throat inflammation" in the sentence " The common cold is frequently defined as nasal inflammation with varying amount of throat inflammation". Could you please support with equivalent phrase and/or explain. Thank you!

    The nose is always inflamed. The throat is also inflamed - sometimes a little, sometimes a bit more, sometimes a lot.
