Very down Vs very sad

    Given that "down" is colloquial to start off with, I don't see why "very" shouldn't be used with it. It may possibly not be the commonest of combinations but I've certainly heard people say it.

    I would not use 'down' as a synonym for 'sad.'

    It might work sometimes, but not always.

    Back to the point:

    As above, if you want to say "very down" (or "really down" or with any other modifier), go right ahead.
