vignettes of people

Hello!
This is an interview of a computer graphic expert talking about a movie he worked in.
"I'm gonna shoot vignettes of peoplethat are doing real-life things. So, hopefully, again, the sum total of what you're seeing, even in the periphery,is something that is real life."
I have no idea what vignettes mean here. Can somebody help me?!

  • I agree.

I'm gonna shoot vignettes of people that are doing real-life things.
Maybe, after editing, each of these is just 20-30 seconds. Some might be still photos, each being shown (in the video) for 10 seconds. The whole series of them is a background ("periphery") for the main thing in the video.

Imagine you are not able to leave your house. Imagine too that your sitting room has a window that allows you to see the park outside. Each day you will see people coming into, using and leaving the park. Sometimes they will be people you haven't seen before and sometimes you will recognise some faces. The important thing is that you have no context outside what you can see from your window. Someone might be happy one day, sad the next, worried on another day and bring a friend on yet another. Each of these is an isolated scene because you cannot know what is going on elsewhere to link them.

Each of these scenes is what we would know to be a "vignette". They are small parts of real life but do not tell the whole story. If you took photographs, those too could be vignettes for exactly the same reason.

Thank you, dojibear. Now it feels more clear !

Thank you, Majorbloodnok! I feel like I will never forget the way you explained! Now it's very clear in my head!
