warp and weft

Quote: Later that day Speck discovered Walter down in the framing room, holding a vacuum cleaner. The Turkey carpet was spread on the floor. A stripe of neutral color ran through the pattern of mottled reds and blues. Looking closer, Speck saw it was warp and weft.

Question: When a carpet is warp and weft, what does it mean?

Backgroud: Walter was using a vacuum to clean the carpet, and each towing of the vacuum left another strip of neutral color for what I consider is dirty removed.

Source: Speck’s Idea, by Mavis Gallant, a short story from her collection ‘Paris Stories’, which you can find in Google Books by the title Paris Stories. (Paragraph 7 from bottom, Page 159)
