was meant to/ meant to

hi there,

I'm really confused with the usage of 'was meant to' and 'meant to'

I thought 'meant. to' means that you intended to but didn't achieve it in the end whereas 'was meant to 'has the meaning of 'because of fate or destiny, I was supposed to..

but just now when I looked 'was meant to' up in the dictionary , it says in there that 'was meant to' also has the meaning of 'intended to'?

I meant to go back home for home during Christmas, but due to covid, the plan got postponed

so I was right to use 'meant to' instead of 'was meant to 'then?

I was meant to go back home = it was someone else's intention for you to go back home

But this is confusing out of further context. And not quite neat.
