Tango enters his apartment and sees his sister give Cash a massage (he thinks they have sex), and then he sees a man behind a window. He thinks it's a criminal, attacks him, but he turns out to be his superior visiting him. And only then does Cash run up aiming a gun at Tango thinking he's a criminal too. Tango tells him:
    - Real great police work! Way to go, Cash! Way to stay on top of it. What the hell were you doing?
    Tango & Cash, movie

I know what expression "way to go" generally means. But since he says another phrase with "way to", I'm wondering what "way to" literally means. Is it the abbreviation of something like "this is the best way to ...."?
    Thanks.

I believe "Way to go" is an abbreviation of the exclamation "What a way to go!" or "That's the way to go!" expressing approval. In this context it's used sarcastically.
