Hi, please, I don't quite get this phrase from Dracula by Bram Stoker:

What have we done, what has this poor thing done, that we are so sore beset?

Thanks!

"Sore beset" is an archaic somewhat biblical expression, meaning to have so many troubles or so much suffering.
You should have given more context - who says this and in what circumstances.

"...what has this poor thing done, that we are so sore beset?... Oh, how we are beset! How are all the powers of the devils against us."
